Sleep study in the Sleep Lab

Symptoms and characteristics

What is it?

Not all sleep problems are the same; the appropriate treatment is very dependant on the diagnosis. A multidisciplinary approach is important because sleep problems can have highly different causes. Some conditions require follow-up with a neurologist, others with a pulmologist, and yet others with an ENT physician or a psychologist.

When is it indicated?

For problems that are difficult to treat, such as high blood pressure, rhythm disturbances or certain physical symptoms, it may be necessary to examine a patient's sleeping pattern. A sleep apnoea syndrome can sometimes shed light on these problems.

Patients come in the evening for the sleep test and are monitored while they sleep. Parameters such as brain activity (EEG), eye and leg movements (EMG), heart rhythm (ECG), breathing, posture and oxygen saturation are monitored.
