Symptoms and causes

The most common symptoms are difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep, not feeling fit during the day... Insomnia also has a negative impact on daily functioning. Fatigue, drowsiness, reduced concentration, irritability and a depressed mood are all common symptoms.

Different factors can play a role in developing and maintaining insomnia: mental over-stimulation, poor sleeping habits, worrying (e.g. about bad sleep), reaction to major life events, chronic stress... and a combination of the above.
