Paraphimosis

What is it?

Phimosis or tight foreskin can give rise to paraphimosis. When the tight foreskin (phimosis) is retracted, the narrow ring of this foreskin is in front of the glans of the penis. The blood supply to all the tissue behind this narrow ring (i.e. the rest of the foreskin and the glans) is cut off. This is painful. Typically, the foreskin cannot be retracted over the head of the penis.

This acute problem can often be solved with an incision of the tight foreskin. Over time, circumcision is usually unavoidable.
