Dr Anthony Van Baelen graduated as a doctor from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 2005.

He then started his urology specialisation at the same university and subsequently sub-specialised in robot-assisted prostate cancer surgery in Melbourne (Australia), in urethral surgery in Pune (India) and in complex percutaneous kidney stone surgery in Ahmedabad (India).

Dr Van Baelen became a Fellow of the European Board of Urology after passing the written and oral exams. He received additional training in statistical methods for risk prediction and prognostic models (University of Birmingham). He is a long-standing member of the Belgian Society of Urology as well as the European Society of Urology.

From a value-driven and scientific perspective, he reinforced the introduction and implementation of some new surgical techniques and devices in the daily urological practice of VZW AZ Maria Middelares. From the same angle, he tried to document and report on the introduction of these innovations in a correct scientific way.
He also obtained the "Green Belt Value-Based Health Care" certificate.

At administrative level within VZW AZ Maria Middelares, he is co-responsible for collecting and analysing medical data, using classical statistical methods, but also new techniques based on artificial intelligence.

Within the Urology department of VZW AZ Maria Middelares, Dr Anthony Van Baelen, as medical leader, is responsible for the focus domain renal stone disease.
