Barrett’s oesophagus

People who suffer from frequent heartburn often show visible ulcers in the oesophagus during an endoscopy. Highly regular exposure to this gastric acid may cause the oesophagus to protect itself by changing the mucous membrane found in the lower part of the oesophagus into a pinkish kind of ileum mucous membrane, otherwise known as Barret’s oesophagus.

Approximately one in ten people who have reflux complaints actually goes on to develop Barret’s oesophagus. In itself this defence mechanism is good, however over time abnormalities can arise in the Barrett mucous membrane, which can eventually even develop into cancer.

It is absolutely necessary to follow up on Barrett’s oesophagus correctly.
