Symptoms and causes

Ankle pain can be felt on the onside, outside, front or back. It is often caused by multiple factors. The pain is sometimes due to instability of ligaments that are too loose. It may sometimes also be caused by osteochondral or cartilage injury. Another cause may be bone growth or scar tissue that forms an obstacle (impingement).

Diagnosis and treatment

To obtain a correct diagnosis, radiography with the individual in a standing position is useful. Ultrasound imaging is sometimes also required. Most cases require thorough clinical examination and further technical tests (MRI scan, SPECT scan and possibly CT scan).
