Symptoms and causes

The cause of Achilles tendon pain often lies in the shortening of the tendon and/or a sudden increase in exercise activity or weight gain. For Achilles tendon pain, we need to differentiate between a problem in the middle of the tendon or more towards where the tendon attaches to the heel. There is usually a local swelling of the Achilles tendon (tendinosis).

Diagnosis and treatment

Stretching exercises (whether or not eccentric) and application of ice are always beneficial. If this does not improve the symptoms, a clinical examination is required. An MRI scan may aid in determining the correct diagnosis. Ultrasound imaging may also be an option.
