Since 1 April 2018, the Maria Middelares General Hospital Ethics Committee (EC) is a completely authorised ethics committee and can serve as a lead ethics committee (LEC) in clinical studies as outlined in the statute of 7 May 2004. The authorisation is for a period of four years. This has been extended for another period, from 1 April 2022 to 30 March 30 2026.

The EC is involved in ethical aspects of patient care and scientific research. A clinical study or experiment may not/can not be started without the approval of an authorised body.

In addition to the EC's evaluative role for (clinical) studies, it also advises on ethical aspects related to health care.
