The word hernia means the bulge of an organ or tissue outside the body cavity where it normally lies.
In Flanders, the word hernia is often used for a hernia at the level of the intervertebral disc in the back.
Outside Flanders, it more often refers to fractures of the abdominal wall. It is these hernias that we treat at the Maria Middelares Hernia Centre.
