Tests and treatments
What is it?What is it?
Tens of thousands of people are affected by a neurological disorder in Flanders every year. These disorders affect the brain, spinal cord or nervous system. A well-known example of a neurological disorder is a stroke (cerebrovascular accident). MS (multiple sclerosis) and Parkinson's disease are also neurological disorders that are responsible for a reduction of function and quality of life.
The nervous system is capable of recovery and adjustment in a number of ways. Rehabilitation has an impact on this and a multi-disciplinary approach plays an important role in this process. We test the patient as a team of physicians and therapists of different disciplines. Next, rehabilitation targets are drawn up together with the patient.
Through therapy, we will try to improve quality of life in the context of daily functioning. All therapists continue to receive training so that every patient receives individually personalised therapy. The different disciplines also use modern technology (e.g. apps and high-tech training equipment). Depending on the condition, the therapists collaborate intensively during the rehabilitation for a period of three months to up to two years.
This rehabilitation is aimed at people who have neurological conditions. The most frequent conditions are:
- CVA (cerebrovascular accident)
- MS (multiple sclerosis) after exacerbation
- Parkinson's disease after acute deterioration
- Polyneuropathy (a condition of the nerves in the arms and legs)
- Paraplegia or paraparesis (partial, two-sided paralysis)
- Tetraplegia (paralysis of the four limbs or quadriplegia) or tetraparesis (partial paralysis of the four limbs)
- Trauma or multitrauma

Taxi Hendriks offers accessible transport to wheelchair users.
Rehabilitation is aimed at retention, recovery and/or improvement of the capabilities of the person who has neurological damage or a functional limitation. Depending on their needs, people can undergo rehabilitation from one to five times a week as an outpatient. The rehabilitation programme has a multi-disciplinary approach. That means that the team consists of physicians and therapists of different disciplines. These are:
- physical therapy
- occupational therapy
- speech therapy
- social services
