Salivary stones are most commonly found in the submandibular salivary glands (under the jaw) and parotid gland. The stone is made up of calcium salt deposits, but the cause of the deposits is unknown. They are more common in middle-aged men.
Symptoms
The symptoms of swelling and pain are usually present with mealtimes.

- bimanual palpation (physical exam using two hands), which can feel any stone that is present
- ultrasound and/or CT scan
Treatment
- sucking lozenges, spontaneous drainage of the stone
- remove them under local or general anaesthesia
